Could an ILR Be the Right Next Step?
If you’ve been experiencing unexplained symptoms and routine tests haven’t given clear answers, this may be the next conversation to have with your care team.
What Is An IRL: Implantable Loop Recorder
Before Your IRL Monitoring Procedure
Your Consultation - The First Step
Before anything else happens, you'll sit down with our medical team for a thorough conversation. We'll review your medical history, listen to your symptoms, and explain exactly why an ILR is being recommended for you specifically.
This is your time. Ask every question on your mind. There are no silly questions when it comes to something being placed inside your body. We want you to feel completely informed and genuinely comfortable before we take the next step.
If a family member or caregiver would like to be part of this conversation, they're welcome to join. Having someone you trust in the room can make a real difference. The procedure itself takes less than 30 minutes. The rest of the time is for settling in, the procedure, and making sure you feel good before you head home.
What to Prepare
The good news is, there's very little you need to do to prepare:
Eat and drink normally before your appointment
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing
Bring your medication list
Bring someone with you if you'd like - having a familiar face nearby is always okay
Plan to be at the clinic for about an hour total
How Remote Monitoring Works
Your Heart Is Being Watched, Even When You're Not in the Clinic
One of the most reassuring parts of having an ILR is the remote monitoring. Your device sends your heart rhythm data securely to our team on a regular basis. You don't need to come into the office every time we need to check in.
Here's How It Works
The ILR continuously records your heart rhythm throughout the day and night. That data is transmitted securely to Hope & Grace. Our medical team reviews it regularly. If we notice anything concerning, we'll reach out to you promptly to discuss next steps.
You'll also have scheduled check-ups with our team, but between those visits, we're still keeping an eye on things.
What This Means for You
You can live your life normally, with the quiet confidence that your heart is being monitored around the clock. You're not on your own with this. Our team is always there, watching over your heart in the background.
Living with your ILR, Day to Day
Your Daily Life, Barely Changed
This is one of the most common questions we hear: "How is this going to affect my everyday life?" The honest answer is very little.
What You Can Do
You can swim and shower normally. You can exercise and stay active. You can travel - by car, by plane, by boat. You can sleep in any position. You can enjoy all the activities you love. Life goes on, with your heart being quietly watched over the whole time.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
Avoid pressing directly on the implant area. Be mindful of where the device is, especially during physical activity or when getting dressed.
Security scanners may detect the device. If you travel by air or pass through metal detectors, some scanners might pick up the ILR. Don't worry - we'll give you a card to carry that explains you have a medical implant. This usually resolves any concerns quickly and easily.
The device records automatically. If you experience symptoms like palpitations or dizziness, the ILR will capture what your heart is doing in that moment. You don't need to press a button or do anything special. It's always recording.

You Don't Have to Figure This Out Alone
Deciding whether an ILR is right for you is a big step, and it's completely normal to feel uncertain. But here's what we want you to hold onto: this tiny device could be the answer you've been waiting for. It could finally explain symptoms that have caused you worry, and give our team the information they need to help you feel better.
Our team at Hope & Grace will be with you at every stage - from your very first conversation, through the procedure, through recovery, and for the full three years of monitoring. We'll explain everything clearly, answer every question honestly, and make sure you feel supported and confident the entire way.
Ready to take the first step?
Your heart deserves answers. We're here to find them with you.
